Board of Osteopathic Examiners in Medicine And Surgery (April 2001, Report No. 01-06)

The Board needs to make several improvements to its complaint investigation and adjudication processes as well as its complaint recordkeeping. First, the Board needs to take disciplinary action when physicians violate the Board’s unprofessional conduct statutes. To help the Board make better adjudicatory decisions, it should make improvements to its complaint investigation and adjudication processes. Further, the Board needs to comply with a statutory requirement to investigate all malpractice complaints that have settlements or judgments and make process improvements to improve the timeliness of all complaint investigations. Finally, the Board needs to improve its complaint recordkeeping to better manage the complaint process and provide the public with accurate information.

This report also includes information regarding the Board’s recent financial crisis, caused by overly optimistic revenue projections and overspending over the past three fiscal years. The Governor provided the Board a loan so that it could continue operating.
